A legal agreement to indenture eighteen enslaved individuals written on May 10th, 1832 in Mexican-governed Austin, Texas by James Cox. Mexico banned the practice of slavery in 1829. As a result, Anglo-American immigrants residing in Texas constructed legal agreements to indenture the enslaved, thereby bypassing the 1829 ban. The legal agreement alleges that the aforementioned "indentured servants" incurred various debts while under Cox, and consequently, are legally obligated to work off their debts. The signatures on the agreement are as follows: James Cox, Thos. H. Borden, Moses Lapham, Horatio Chrisman, William Jack, and eleven of the eighteen enslaved persons: George, Jacob, Jim, Nat, Haskles, William, Jacob, Rhoda, Thomas, Jacob, and Isabella (each of whom signed an X next to their name as did not know how to write). —— Un acuerdo legal para contratar a dieciocho personas esclavizadas escrito el 10 de mayo de 1832 en Austin, Texas, gobernado por México, por James Cox. The 1855 Mexican Law Decree was mandated on February 13, 1855, in Mexico, and it was decreed by President Santa Anna and signed by Governor of the Federal District Martin Carrera and Secretary Joaquin Noriega. A letter transmission from the United States ambassador to Mexico, J.R. Poinsett, to the American Secretary of State Martin Van Buren. Poinsett outlines the paranoia and scapegoating he believes is occurring domestically in Mexico, mainly direct towards him in his capacity as the representative of the United States. Poinsett also outlines the dissolution occurring domestically in Mexico.
