- Alma Lopez is a queer Chicana artist who uses her art to explore feminist perspectives on Latine culture. In 2001, she created "Our Lady," a digital photo montage that features a woman in a two-piece bathing suit, adorned with flowers, superimposed with the image of the Virgin de Guadalupe, a significant religious figure in Latine culture. Through this piece, Lopez portrays the intricate connections between womanhood, gender, and religion. However, the piece faced controversy due to the representation of a religious figure in a revealing outfit and breasts exposed by another figure in the artwork. The Catholic Church took issue with the artwork.
