Alma Lopez is a queer Chicana artist who uses her art to explore feminist perspectives on Latine culture. In 2001, she created "Our Lady," a digital photo montage that features a woman in a two-piece bathing suit, adorned with flowers, superimposed with the image of the Virgin de Guadalupe, a significant religious figure in Latine culture. Through this piece, Lopez portrays the intricate connections between womanhood, gender, and religion. Description:
The Gay Hispanic Caucus was established in Houston, Texas, in 1978 with the aim of creating social, cultural, and educational events that would bring together members of the LGBTQIA+ community. In 1985, the organization changed its name to Gay and Lesbian Hispanics Unidos (GLHU) to be more inclusive of women. As GLHU, the organization shifted its focus to include political activism in social, cultural, and educational initiatives. LLEGO participated in the Transgender Rights are Human Rights Panel at the Amnesty International Mid-Atlantic Regional Conference, which brought together organizations to discuss and promote human rights on a national level.
