Description:

Alma Lopez is a queer Chicana artist who uses her art to explore feminist perspectives on Latine culture. In 2001, she created "Our Lady," a digital photo montage that features a woman in a two-piece bathing suit, adorned with flowers, superimposed with the image of the Virgin de Guadalupe, a significant religious figure in Latine culture. Through this piece, Lopez portrays the intricate connections between womanhood, gender, and religion. However, the piece faced controversy due to the representation of a religious figure in a revealing outfit and breasts exposed by another figure in the artwork. The Catholic Church took issue with the artwork. This piece is an example of the backlash that Lopez received. —— Alma López es una artista chicana queer que utiliza su arte para explorar las perspectivas feministas de la cultura latine.
