Description:
Alma Lopez is a queer Chicana artist who uses her art to explore feminist perspectives on Latine culture. In 2001, she created "Our Lady," a digital photo montage that features a woman in a two-piece bathing suit, adorned with flowers, superimposed with the image of the Virgin de Guadalupe, a significant religious figure in Latine culture. Through this piece, Lopez portrays the intricate connections between womanhood, gender, and religion. However, the piece faced controversy due to the representation of a religious figure in a revealing outfit and breasts exposed by another figure in the artwork. The Catholic Church took issue with the artwork. Description:
The Gay Hispanic Caucus was established in Houston, Texas, in 1978 with the aim of creating social, cultural, and educational events that would bring together members of the LGBTQIA+ community. In 1985, the organization changed its name to Gay and Lesbian Hispanics Unidos (GLHU) to be more inclusive of women. As GLHU, the organization shifted its focus to include political activism in social, cultural, and educational initiatives. GLHU was dedicated to advocating for the rights, well-being, and visibility of LGBTQIA+ Hispanics. Arthur created the Baile event, a traditional Mexican dance featuring Texas Tejano music. Held annually during gay pride week, the event aimed to bring together Latine individuals to celebrate their identity, commemorate the challenges they have overcome, and foster social connections. —— El Gay Hispanic Caucus se estableció en Houston, Texas en 1978 con el objetivo de crear eventos sociales, culturales y educativos que reunieran a miembros de la comunidad LGBTQIA+. Mas Amor, Por Favor is a Zine released by the Mujeristas Collective, based in Brooklyn, New York. The Mujeristas Collective is an intersectional art collective for Latine and Women of Color artists and writers based in New York. The zine focuses on relating experiences Latine women have with breakups, including experiences of family deportations and lesbian relationships.
