Description:
The engraved portrait of Ferdinand VII is supported by Spain's emblem, the two pillars of Hercules wrapped with the motto, "Plus Ultra," or “More Beyond,” a reference to Spain’s colonization of the Americas. The background, which depicts battlegrounds and soldiers on horseback, illustrates the reality that is symbolized by the scene on the foreground: a lion dominating over a fire-breathing monster. At the bottom of the composition, the allegory is explained with a saying, "From time to time, the Lion of Spain roars and sees the monsters that infest it tremble,” which alludes to the Spanish response towards the Napoleonic invasion.
